Connecting 2 x 13A Ovens
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.54 PM
Hello, I'm looking to install 2 x single ovens; each of these is rated at 13A (max absorbed power 2600kW). There is current a 2 gang socket right next to the cupboard above the worktop, is it suitable to plug them straight into this (albeit a bit unsightly with the cables visible)? Further, if they can be plugged straight into the socket, could this be relocated to an adjacent cupboard? Or does this require some more advanced wiring setup to support? Many thanks!

Hi Bob,
Any appliance that is designed with a 13A plug top is intended by the manufacturer to be connected directly to a socket outlet, however the maximum electrical demand of the circuit you are intending to connect these ovens into should be taken into consideration, so as to prevent a potential overload of the circuit. (Edit) Also, see Delecs post with regards to maximum load on socket being at 20a.
Providing a socket outlet is installed into the adjacent cupboard correctly and in accordance with BS7671, then it is possible to do as you suggest. However, if you have the opportunity to provide these cookers with their own supply, that would definitely be a more desirable option and would also prevent any potential issues with circuit limitations being exceeded.

Don't plug 2x 13A appliances into one double socket. Double sockets to BS1363-2:1995 are only rated to take a total of 20A, and even at this rating the terminals on the socket would reach 70°C under normal conditions. Double sockets aren't designed to take a maximum load on both sides. Plug each oven into separate sockets, ideally 2x singles installed in an adjacent cupboard.

Hi, another option is to remove the double socket and replace with 2 x 13amp switch fuse spur switches above worktop close to the ovens and connect the 2 ovens into each of them ....this giving easy access for isolation in a emergency
