Plastering & Rendering

Plaster or plasterboard

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

I need my stairs and hall plastering. There are virtually no external walls as it is an inner terraced house. My question: Is it better to remove old plaster to brick then replace with new plaster or to use plasterboard and skim?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you remove the plaster and render to the brick. You will have to re-render and plaster. Easier to remove the existing plaster and render then dry line the walls with new plasterboard and skim. If you can afford to loose some space you can dry line straight over the existing plaster

Cost is probably the consideration. In the scenario that you do hack everything back to brick/stone ( be prepared for a mess and airbourne particles/dust). The cost of re-rendering/plaster versus a plasterboard dot and dab covering/plaster is cheaper for the plasterboarding. Also much quicker and drying out of new materials much faster.

Hi Roger, hardwall and skim or plaster board and skim would get the job done just fine. Person I would recommend the 1st suggested as it's a much more solid finish to the wall in which you made need if your hall stairs and landing takes quite a bit of knocking about. Thanks Rhys Bottriell

Cost wise dry lining would work out better, but depends whether you want a solid wall or dry lined. Either way would need to be sealed after you remove the old plaster with sbr
