Electrical

consumer unit/ old fuse box

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

Hi I have an old style consumer unit fuse box in my ex-council flat and am about to start some refurbishment work in my kitchen. I'm not sure if it's called a martel unit but I've been advised that it can only be replaced with a specialised skeleton consumer unit which only certain manufactuers make. This includes certification and part p . Although I am concerned about the safety aspect of the old fuse box I understand that new consumer units often disconnect the fuses a lot quicker especially with older wiring which is of a concern I would be grateful for any further advice ,and suggestions -Thanks

You mean earth leakage protection via Rcds or RCBO’s. What’s the reason for the con unit change, have they done an EICR of the installation to establish if the wiring is ok? As for the skeleton board, they are rarely used these days and the make you quoted I have never heard of.

Hi , well first of all you want a EICR report on your property to check the quality and condition of your installation and to see if any problems will occur, Also after the installation has been checked you will know what work has to be undertaken prior to installing a new board which incorporates a rcd or rcbo so you wont have problems are the board has been installed, and will only disconnect under a new fault, and lastly the name of the cupboard the board will be installed is presumably a mantel cupboard which opens to see the board enclosed , we no longer use skeleton boards asuch because they are not fire rated and enclosed which they now have to be under the third amendment bs7671 17th edition wiring regulations, the board you are looking for are made by a company named Wylex which is a metal fuse board with wings attached to the sides so you can secure this board inside the cabinet after taken out the old board , hope this helps
