Neighbours on the floor below believe our plumbing is causing blockages

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

I live on the top floor of a three-story ex-council block. Our neighbors from the floor below have said that their toilet is getting blocked every few days and they've had to call out an emergency plumber (although this is the first I'm hearing about it). They have said it seems to block when we are at home and they think the blockage is our side and it is backing up into their toilet. They think that it is the main pipe which is shared between the 3 flats. I'm not sure how we could cause this. We're not flushing anything other than loo roll and we've not had any problems at our end. What is the likely cause of this blockage and how can I convince them that it isn't caused by our flat. If I hired a plumber to check, what can they do to determine the cause?

Some times a toilet can repeatedly get blocked if there is not a sufficient amount of water being flushed from the cistern to fully flush the debris away. Check that the water level in the toilet cistern is high enough. if not this is a simple job to rectify. If not enough water is flushing through the drainage system it can cause the debris to become lodged in the drainage pipe, which then can cause a blockage. It is best to check this first before getting the drain channels checked. Hope this helps. Regards Gary

if theirs is blocking then the people below them would be flooded, it must be their foul waste pipe run that is the issue not yours, all the toilets will run into one main pipe but all have to get to it first.
