How to deal with very damp kitchen floor under vinyl covering

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.33 PM

I had a piece of vinyl laid on my (small) floor 2.5 years ago. About a year ago black spots of discolouration started to appear on it, which have slowly spread to several areas, also a small shallow depression has developed recently. Yesterday I peeled back the vinyl in 2 areas and discovered quite a soggy layer underneath, possibly hardboard. I need someone to assess the problem and its cause and then to put it right.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It would seem that there is a water leak somewhere in the kitchen that is getting under the vinyl floor covering. It could be a very small drip or small leak from the kitchen taps, waste trap or from a washing machine valve. Once water gets under the vinyl floor covering it cant dry out properly until the vinyl is uplifted to let the air dry it out. The source of the leak needs to be repaired and the old vinyl flooring needs to be uplifted to allow it to dry out. Check for adequate ventilation in the kitchen also.
