Has wooden floor been re-varnished properly.
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.53 PM
We had a wooden floor sanded and re-varnished. The old varnish has been removed, but the floor is now rough to the touch. Last night we spilt some water on it and it made a dark stain (which has now dried in), should this happen to a varnished floor?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi
Could be a couple of things. Sounds like either they've not gone up to a smooth enough grit finish.
Normally after a first coat of water based lacquer, you will get what is known as grain raise. It's normal, the fibres in the wood have opened up to accept the finish. Normally you buff in between coats to de-nib.......basically to flatten any peaks. Then you would proceed to do the same twice again, quote depending. I generally do three.
If the floor has been finished correctly, a mild spill with clean up shouldn't make a difference.
Doesn't sound like it has been finished as it should have
Hope this helps :)

No it shouldn't. I dont re-finish floors myself but have many customers that have had theirs done, and done correctly the finish should be smooth and impervious to staining....esp water. I hope you achieve some recourse from whoever has done this
