What product seals pebbledash render before painting

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

I'm planning to do some DIY job painting an external wall with masonry paint. My pebble dash is extremely hard and has very good integrity. It's actually a lot harder than the brickwork behind it as I discovered when installed a bathroom ventilation fan. However, in some places the pebble is over a few existing stones, making a hole between them. If I paint over it, the paint won't seal inside this hole. I have seen on some houses there's a smoothing layer which is thick and can cover these irregularities, but I can't find out what is it. Any recommendations? My first bet it's some kind of plasticizer and fine sand / cement mix applied with a large brush or gun.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, your thinking along the right lines if there's little cracks and defects you can do whats called ' bagging up ' which is a sand and cement mix which is brushed on with a semi soft sweeping brush. I'm presuming your looking to do it your self if so jump on YouTube and there's tutorials on there to show you the mix and different ways of applying it. Thanks Sonny

Best to re-render smooth. However, if you plan on keeping existing pebbledash, you can seal it with trade dulux weathershield masonry (watered down first coat so that it soaks in) - then apply 1-2 regular coats until you are satisfied with the finish.
