Electrical

low voltage in all sockets in the house

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.12 PM

Hi, I have just moved into my new property and I have noticed that all the sockets take ages to charge any of my electrical equipment (mobile, laptop etc) would anyone know why and what can be done to have "normal" sockets around the house? I assume the wiring was inspected during my purchase process but I can't find anything about it in the documentation. ouch! :( Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The UK mains supply is about 230 volts AC and this should be the voltage to a 3 pin socket outlet within your home, this is standard for the UK but if you have doubts you can always purchase one of the below items to double check before you call out an Electrician. It is a simple way to check if your sockets are wired correctly. SOK 32 Professional Socket Tester or the LAP MS6860D SOCKET TESTER.

The uk supply is a NOMINAL voltage of 230 volts. I have been to properties where it has been as high as 245 v never come across any that were lower. would suggest that the voltage is not the problem, to eliminate this fact, get an electrician in with a calibrated multi meter to check it over, starting at the consumer unit, then the rest of the installation and compare the readings then take it from there.

Are you trying to charge your mobile devices from a transformer plugged into the socket or from the USB outlet on the socket front, from your post I'm going to predict a USB outlet. If it is then you might find they are not the correct rating, USB sockets come in different sizes some are 2.1 Amps some 3.1 Amps while they will all work if the amps is smaller it will take longer to charge.
