Building over part of a block of garages?
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.35 PM
Hi, my house is a 70’s semi. I want to have a double height side extension. To the side of my house is a block of 3 garages separated by a path at the side of my house.. The closest being mine. The other two are neighbours. Is it possible to build over mine from my house to make it integral? Or remove my garage from the block of 3 and build it fresh to the side of my house with the path to my rear garden at my neighbours garage side? I do have a picture to explain if that helps?

A bit difficult to picture and no construction details for the garages. However, most detached garages will be poorly founded and unable to take a 1st floor extension. Wild thoughts around installing a steel framed structure to bridge and leave independent, which would be expensive and require a structural engineer. In most instances i would suggest knowing it down and starting afresh

Dear Paul
Many thanks for your question , you have two option to know the answer.
1-In this situation you do a( bore hole or trial pit ) which means you dig a 500*500 hole beside the existing footing of the garage till you reach the bottom then the structural engineer decide if it is suitable or not.
