Brown stain on ceiling of bedroom

We have been plagued by brown stains on both ceilings in our two bedrooms. We have had both chimneys dropped, and my husband looked in the loft and roof looks fine, as do the gable wall bricks, which are bone dry. Just wondered if anyone could tell us where these brown stains are coming from. We only hav electric fires in downstairs lounge and dining room. Also central heating.

It certainly sounds like some sort of water leak to me. Either dripping pipework or rainwater get in somehow. My initial thought was that rainwater is getting in, hence the brown stains.
