Fitting spotlights/downlights before or after plastering
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.12 PM
Hi, I’m fitting spotlights in all the bedrooms upstairs and I’m just wondering whether to fit these before I get a plasterer in to overskim the room or to fit them after once room has been plastered? Thanks
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you are fitting plaster in recessed lights which look great; see saxby plaster in downlights you need to fit them before and plasterer will plaster them in this provides a great finish .
If you are just having normal downlights make sure you have the cable locations and the plasterer can plaster up to the cable or push it back in to void and plaster over then you can use the correct size hole saw to do the cut outs ,
If you fit them before. The plasterer will just drop them so there hanging and you can push them back in after .
Either way it won’t be a problem

Hi
The plasterers will get a better finish on the ceiling if the holes are drilled after as they would not have to struggle trying to plaster around the holes.
With the lights being on the 1st floor they can they be wired as the holes are drilled in the loft.

As GCC Electrical's awnser. Also worth considering getting a mist coat or two on the new plaster prior to fitting the spots etc
