Damp Proofing

Mould and damp in old flat roof extension

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

My father is elderly and widowed and hasn't been taking care of his home -but refuses to admit he has a problem. His house was built circa 1920 and he moved in the 1970s - about 10 years after that, he built a flat-roofed extension on the side of the house, it is on the ground floor, which hosts the kitchen and bathroom. The extension has always been cold and poorly ventilated. On my last visit to him, the bathroom was covered in what looks like black mould, literally everywhere all over the ceiling and walls. Can someone advise me on how we can assess the damage (what type of specialist can we call in - is a damp survey enough or is there a type of accredited mould specialist profession), what can be done to fix it, and what to do about a poorly constructed/damp extension with an idea of costs for a survey, repair/renovation. I'm really worried about his health living there but he refuses to sell or move. Thanks so much for reading this.

Hi there, Most surface black mould problems like this occur due to poor ventilation. Condensation forms on the cold walls, giving the moisture that the mould requires to reproduce. Cleaning with a dilute bleach solution will kill the mould and remove, but it will come back. There are paints available that contain mould-inhibitive additives and these can also help to delay the return of the mould, but ultimately the root cause of the problem must be handled. Fitting an extractor fan and heater will help to minimise the amount of condensation and are not too expensive. It will need a combination of building work (drilling a hole through the brickwork) electrical (to connect the extractor) and decorating.
