Who to investigate & repair creaky floorboards?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

The floorboards on the upper floor of the house we've just moved into are quite creaky. This is occurring in a 2-3 of the double-sized bedrooms plus a small square-shaped hallway which connects said rooms. Ahead of getting new carpets, seems like a good time to have the floorboards investigated & repaired. However, unclear as to which kind of trade should be contracted for this - carpenter? flooring? general builder? What is the recommendation? Also, how long would a job like this realistically take? Based on limited knowledge, I imagine the job would require taking up carpets, thorough investigation of the causes, agreement on proposed solution, sourcing of materials for repair, and actual time to repair. Assuming no horrible surprises come up as part of the investigation, would 2-3 days be reasonable or really be going into weeks? Thank you in advance for sharing thoughts.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

A joiner should be called and lay down some thick chip board before relaying the Capet , this will stop any creeks or bounces .

You would have to lay thick chipboard throughout the whole floor level if you used thick boards to keep consistentcy from room to room at thresholds , If you have no skills in diy get a joiner to come once the boards are exposed ( he will not want to have to lift carpet and so) Exiting boards can be drilled countersunk and screwed down to secure them and eliminate noise, If the floor is really gappy use a sealant to fill big gaps.
