Can we brick around our existing brick chimney breast

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.16 PM

We have removed the plasterboard from our brick chimney breast in our 1830's cottage but the bricks are not attractive. Can we simply brick around the existing chimney to create a new layer of more attractive bricks, or should we prop it all up and re brick the existing chimney breast? Many thanks.

Support would be needed if floor is floorboards solid slap would be fine. As long as there is support that’s strong enough building around it Is fine just tie in the new Brickwork with the old using tiewires. Alternatively you could use brick slips and simply apply them like tiles would give the same look but with out reinforcing the floor. Hope this helps

there is no promlem with bricking aroung your fire place, but extra floor support would be needed if you have a timber floor, you can buy brick slivers which are only 15mm in depth, wich are glued with a mortor paste layed in brick pattern of your choice, these solve weight & loss of room space problems & look prefect as they are a brick just thinner

You can’t build on top of our current floor if it is timber, this is down to the weight of the brickwork. If you have knocked off the plasterboard and the surface behind is solid and plumb you can use brick slips, a lot of module houses/extensions are also fitted with these because of the transport weight. I would suggest doing the same and it will give you the same desired effect. Brick slips are 20mm thick, adhere to the wall and pointed the same as a traditional brick.
