Building up patio height with foundation spoil
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.52 PM
Hi, I have a couple of patios that need the height/ level building up as my property is being extended at the rear. Would it be possible to use some of the spoil from the excavation of the foundations (9 cubic metres). Also the current patio retaining walls are a bit of a state, so assuming I can remove the current flags, build new retaining walls and then be able to back fill them with what's dug out of the extension?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

IF you can compact it enough, it MAY work but you will not find out if it has worked until a year or a few years later so why risk it to save what, £100's for sure but longterm...a sinking nightmare. You could try compacting it then lay thick layer of reinforced concrete over it, but that is far dearer than a skip and 9 ton of proper hardcore that will compact. A DIYer maybe you, or an inexperienced "Landscaper" will lay a patio on sand and blobs which also always sinks. The only way to be sure is to find a long established Landscaper that will give you a guarantee of FIVE years against sinkage...which we do
