New radiator valve on 1/2 inch iron inlet pipe

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.12 PM

I am on a communal heating system in a block of flats. I want to replace valves on old 1930's radiators. I bought new valves that have 1/2 inch thread to radiator but 15mm inlet pipe. However, as my existing inlet pipe is 1/2 inch iron, I was advised by a plumber that it is not possible to install my new valves. The only valves he could find that were suitable for 1/2 inch inlet connection are the Drayton TRV4 valves. Question (A): I am not sure if my plumber was being lazy when he said he could not connect the valves with 15mm inlet to a 1/2" iron inlet pipe. I would like to know if a plumber with more expertise and problem solving skill should be able to do this? Question (B): Where can I source better looking valves than the Drayton TRV4s that would be suitable for connection to a 1/2 inch iron inlet pipe?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

to start with to do this you will need to shut down and drain entire system, iron pipework is threaded so valves would have to be threaded as well,so the valves you bought are no good at all,for an experienced plumber or pipe fitter the job would be no problem, but you have to take into consideration the age of the pipework as stripping the valves from the pipes can damage the pipe depending how corroded it is,this is a job that could turn into a nightmare, you will also need to gain permission from your landlord and the occupants of the other flats .

Don't touch it. Some jobs can be DIY'd but not this one. Get a plumber in.
