We need to verify a company before paying them advance , is this possible?

There doesn't seem to be a telephone number to call to verify a trades man. How do we do this before paying advance payment for work not yet done?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Ask for some name an address of their previous customers. Go round take a look at their work and ask questions check if they are on any web site review do they have a business address just the usual checks after all you picked the company to carryout your work so I am presuming your happy with them.
