Painting over stained wood

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

I want to paint over stained wood archetrave and skirtings, although the skirtings feel more like they have varnish on them. I've previously used Zinsser BIN but find it really hard to work with as it drys so quick so am I better off rubbing all woodwork down, using a primer, then a undercoat and satinwood to finish and do you think it will need two coats of satinwood? also I'm guessing with it being stained the knots will already be sealed or do I need to seal them also.. Will the skirtings need treating differently because of having deviously been varnished?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi zinnser bin is the best solution. Ultimate adherance and also blocks stains and knots, it helps to mask off any surface you dont want painted as this will help you to work faster wirh it, also try working a section at a time, with the 45 minuite (and under) re-coat time this is manageable. There are other gripping primers you can use, but i always make sure the surfaces are clean and free from contaminants, using sugar soap etc. Some but not all satinwoods are self-undercoating. If self-undercoating i prefer two coats of satinwood rather than 1 u/c 1 finish coat
