Does a plinth that is cracked and blown need to be replaced or will coats of bitumen be enough?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Hi, the concrete plinth to an elevation wall has lost adhesion to the wall and is blown and cracked and is probable cause of damp. If the plinth is removed and then only painted with 2 coats of bitumen to the exposed brickwork - would this be okay? Note this is only for the external work

Hi. Any blown or delaminated substrates (rendered plinth)should be removed and re made. In my opinion bitumen coatings are a bit past their time, there are many products on the market that can stop water ingress but allow the substrate to breathe. By applying a bitumen coating direct to the brick footing you are incapsulating the damp ,this will either push the damp in or cause failure to the bitumen coating and the brick face.
