Gap in the backboard under the sink - damp smell

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.12 PM

Hello, could someone please tell me whether there is meant to be a gap anywhere on the back board under a kitchen sink (to let that area breath??). What I mean is, if you go into the cupboard under our kitchen sink the board that make sup the back of the cupboard only goes up part way - it stops approx' 6" short of the top. The smell of damp under the sink drives me nuts (and I think it is because it is an outside wall) so I want to fill the gaps in - is this ok to do?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You will probably find though that the smell will not go. There must be an underlying reason for the damp.

I surveyed many property's where has no back board at all. As SPS stated you have a problem, usually a small weep on a joint. I would remove the back board to try and locate the leak or a surveyor to visit and he will an endoscope to locate the leak. Mike

Some, not all, kitchen suppliers' sink units are like this. It's not for breathing as there should not be any moisture being produced as all the pipework should be sealed. You can have this sealed but if there is damp coming in, you really need to see what is causing it and fix it first. Take out the entire back panel if necessary and then have a carpenter fit a panel to close it up again.
