Do i need an earth wire for a smoke alarm?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

I have 2 old existing interlinked smoke alarms to be replaced and hardwired. One downstairs one upstairs. Wiring has Live Neutral and Interconnect. I cannot see an earth and not sure if this is required.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes the cable needs an Earth wire, it needs to be continuous throughout, even if there is no actual Earth to connect it to within the detectors it needs to be put in a connector and the integrity of the Earth tested with a calibrated tester.

Yes you do! although the alarm will not need a source of earth due to having a plastic body. the cable needs to have a earth present.
