Damp Proofing

Damp/mouldy smell in living room

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

Hi, about 6 months ago we replaced to joists in over living room as they were rotten (from previous owner the downstairs of house was really badly damp). We had caber flooring fitted along with new skirting and all walls had a damp proof course injected re rendered and plasters. After it rains I can smell a damp smell along the one of the walls. I have pulled back the carpet and can't see any mould but can smell it. There is good air flow from a gap underneath the skirting and the caber flooring. The smell seems to be around the length of the exterior wall (about 5 meters) and from the wall back into the room for about 1m. From my knowledge underneath the caber flooring is just soil/earth. I don't really want to pull everything up any ideas what it could be? On the outsdie of the said wall there is a build up of concrete in the corner where an extension has been build. The air vents on the outside wall all look clear.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Difficult to pinpoint from your description but there are only 3 types of damp; RISING (up to about 1m high) when salts are being drawn up out of damp earth because there is no damp-proof course, PENETRATING where moisture is coming form outside (may be high external ground or a leaking gutter) or CONDENSATION occurs through lack of ventilation. All treatable by different means.
