recommended design of stone and lime mortar topping of old stone walls

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.11 PM

I have just had the part that was falling down of an old stone (blue lias) retaining wall repaired, using lime mortar. The rest of the original wall is capped with alternating heights of stones on edge close together (known as "cock and hen"). The repair has been done with gaps of about 2 to 4 inches between the capping stones that in between them is the lime mortar used to bed in the capping stones. Is this a suitable way to have done this and is it as effective as the usual way? I have another wall which we repaired with a topping of a harder mix of lime mortar than used for the wall below it. I have not yet checked the mixes used.
