Softwood external doors - 'interesting' pre-undercoat advice?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

We've bought some traditional Redwood (i.e softwood) Stable doors for the back door of our cottage. One will be inside the lean to, the other exposed, but will be reasonably sheltered. We were recommended Sikkens Rubbol Primer Plus and Satura Plus, which we have got. Just by chance I noticed someone selling similar softwood doors made to order (so not just a reseller, or trying to flog extra chemicals, someone with a vested interest in the product) and they state; "If painting, we recommend using Cuprinol Wood Preserver (Clear) to use as a basecoat before painting, i.e followed by undercoat and several coats of paint" Is that really good advice? Having read the back of the Cuprinol tin online, it does say that it's fine underneath solvent based paints.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would stick with what you have chosen. It is a paint system designed for the application you have.

There is no harm in using Cuprinol wood preserver (clear) as an base coat before painting, been a external door would help with weathering and still aply paint system you have hope this helps, Christopher.
