Unable to turn external door handles to open patio doors

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

I can lock & unlock both the inside & outside of my outside French style double garden patio doors but I'm unable to turn the handle(s) to actually open the doors. Why? I'm reluctant to force the door handles for fear of them snapping off. I've taken the door handles off and put WD40 where I could (not anywhere really) but no success. What do I need to do? (NB I live in a coastal area). Thank you

Hi there, Rick from Omnisec Locksmiths here. First of all, you are absolutely correct not to force the door handles, as this could cause further problems, in the form of damaging the spindle locator inside the lock case. It could also bend and cause damage to the runners of the mechinisim - all of this results in further costs. It sounds like these doors are uPVC French style doors, operating Euro profile cylinders. A common problem with these, is that both the locking and slave side will seize if not used very often. Wd40 is often a remedy, but clearly, you cannot get to the whole mechinisim at the moment. Another problem could be the alignment of your doors - it is common for these type of doors to fall out of alignment due to either heavy use or changes in the seasons. I would recommend the attendance of a locksmith to sort this problem out for you. A trained locksmith, such as myself, has methods to open your door, without any damage, after which, hopefully all it will need is either a realignment or a good spray with wd40. From your description, it sounds like your keys and Euro cylinders are ok and this part of the centre case is also ok. Price wise, obviously I cannot discuss that here, but from the sound of it, I doubt you will need parts so you should only pay an agreed labour charge to whoever you decide to call. Time wise, these can be tricky to align at times, so I would say, job should be completed within half an hour. If it is a more serious fault, like the centre case, the locksmith may have to order if it's not on his van. In these circumstances, a good locksmith will resecure your door and be back to complete the job within 24 hours (It does not sound like a centre case problem). I hope this helped

we cant answer your door problem without seeing pictures of the door and the locking type.. e.g picture taken of the handle lock area and base of door, from the picture we can if its aluminium or plastic build ... to assume anything in locksmithing is unprofessional and would give the customer an error in estimating the job value.
