Felt back carpet on stairs

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.11 PM

Hi, can someone help with some advice please. I had a felt back carpet fitted with underlay and wooden gripper 2 months ago and the carpet is coming away from the stairs and sagging. I called the company who supplied and fitted the carpet and they sent the fitter back who said that felt back carpet isn't suitable for stairs and he would be back every few weeks to tighten it up so I will always have this problem. I've since spoken to the carpet company whose proposed solution is to re cut and the fit the carpet again and 'hopefully' it'll solve the issue. Are there any fitters out there that can give me some advice please, I'm more concerned that we have our elderly parents stay with us throughout each year and one of them could suffer a fall. Thanks Daniel

The problem with fitting felt backed carpet on a staircase is that the teeth or spikes of the gripper rods do not grab the felt backing of the carpet in the same way as they do with an action or hessian backed carpet. For this reason, I never fit a felt backed carpet on a staircase. Ignore the first answer, he hasn't got a clue what he's talking about.

most of the time the problem with carpet coming away on stairs is the gripper is not tight enough .if the gripper is wider that your thumb on the tread and riser then there is always a chance the carpet will become loose .you could ask the fitter to spray stick the carpet to the tread and re position the gripper tighter and spray in-between the grippers

Im not a carpet fitter by any means but i do know felt back carpet is fine for stairs as long as you use underlay and gripper(gripper on top of the underlay) if this is how its done it should be fine if not its been done by a not so good tradesman and if i was you i would get the company out to rectify it Lee
