Possible to increase single garage width from 1.0 to 1.5?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

Hi, I'm looking for some advice. I have a detached brick single garage and need additional width for storage purposes. I don't want to build a double garage due to eating too much of my garden space up and cost, or wouldn't want to lose my my driveway if I decided to extend the garages by length. So basically enquiring to see if it could be extended to one side effectively making it between a single and double in size? I am located 15 miles outside of Glasgow, Scotland The garage roof is flat and felted with good 2" timber beams running across it and it looks relatively new and I think may have been refreshed by my houses previous owner. I'm not looking for anything fancy just a no frills extension to the width. What I would like advice in is: 1 Would I need planning permission for aforementioned work? 2 Is this going to be difficult or complicated to do or something fairly straight ? My non trade brain thinks digging away the soil bed to add to the foundation to increase width. Removing the flat felted roof and right wall, building up a new wall then placing longer ,2" timber supports to span wall to wall then fit a flat felted, or am I over simplifying? Appreciate any help offered, many thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

1. Planning permission - perhaps, or perhaps not. It depends on whether you can used permitted development rights and whether or not you are in a conservation area, etc. 2. Your breakdown is essentially correct. It is not a particularly tricky job, but still needs to be done properly to ensure it ties in with existing garage. It will also need a floor. Alternatively, depending on how you want to use the space, you could build the extension and then break through using lintel supported openings, which would avoid having to take down the roof and one side of the garage. It wouldn't give you a full length opening, but might suit time and cost constraints. This latter may not suit, depending on the final appearance you are looking for,
