Central Heating

Very loud banging

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

Every few days my heating/ hot water system makes a lot of noise, usually in the middle of the night, it's so loud it sounds like somebody is breaking in. Both heating and hot water is controlled by a Rayburn. As I said it's not constant, just when it's been on for a few days, noise seems to be coming from the hot water tank and the loft. Is this an easy fix? I've just moved in to the house so need to keep costs as low as possible.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

May just need some more clips on pipework in the loft to stop the water hammer.

could be water hammer, uncliped pipes, ball valve in tank defective, fit an equilibriam valve,if you cant find uncliped pipe fit a water hammer arrester in pipework as near to where sound comes from, middle of night mains pressure goes up you may need to fit pressure reducing valve, what fuel does rayburn use,it may be a thermostat is not working and water overheating .
