Base for my art studio

I have found a tradesman from your site to carry out the work (laying a concrete foundation for the studio) and he seems very nice but he's asking for 1/2 the quote of £1200 upfront before he starts work. As we don't know him we only have his good reviews to go by so us this standard practice?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Trust I am afraid, personally our policy is no money up front (pay as you go) and also personally I would not pay £1200 up front.

trust is a two way thing,he has to pay for materials to start job, what happens if material is put on site and in the end he does not get paid, this is common business practice ,maybe not with small companies but large companies call it motivation money, have you contacted any of his previous clients for references ?.
