Earthy/soil smell in kitchen area - possibly the sink?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

Hi, We've just moved into a 1930s semi detached house 2 months ago, which in the last 24 - 48 hours has developed a pungent earthy, dank, soil smell in the kitchen/diner. I can't track down the precise source, but I have a feeling it is the sink unit. There is no obvious damp or leaks anywhere & the smell doesn't go away with ventilation. It has been a little wet outside, but it's certainly not been heavy rain & we have had periods of much worse rain without the smell occurring previously. I don't know if this is relevant, but the sink unit in the kitchen is adjacent to a rangemaster cooker. The other day, I noticed a brief but fairly strong whiff of gas which I assumed was the range (gas hobs) but now I am wondering if there is some sort correlation between the two smells?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

it could be a very small leak on a joint on the water pipe dripping onto the floor on a pipe that is not visible behind unit if you smell any gas you should have your gas pressure tested to see if there is a leak
