Can I tile over wet-wall?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

My bathroom has laminated plywood "wet wall" installed. It's in good condition, I just don't like it and want to tile the bathroom. Is it possible to tile over this (with appropriate adhesive and/or by roughing the surface)? I'd like to avoid removing it - I'll likely wreck the wall underneath - or fixing another layer of board to it (this will be my preference if I can't avoid it).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. Yes you could tile over it, but like you say score the surface well and make sure you use flexible adhesive and grout. Cheers now.

Hi, my advice would be to make sure that the 'wet wall' is EXTREMELY well fixed and then cover it in 6mm No More Ply (NMP) which will provide you with a first class substrate. Simply prime the NMP with SBR primer and your ready to fix your tiles. I would still recommend flexi grout (cement based) and you'll have a great finish.
