Can roof supports be moved
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.11 PM
Hi, I have a small attic where the supports for the roof, approx 6, stick out from the roof into the middle of the room. In order to make better use of the small space and open it up for an office I would like to move the beams of wood, or reposition them better. But is this possible, will it require planning permission and what sort of cost is involved??
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

To utilize a roof space, planning may not be required but Building Regulations are. You have to consider means of escape and fire regulations.
With regard to removal/ re-position of timbers in the roof void be very careful. I think you may be referring to the diagonal and horizontal members of a roof truss. If so under no circumstances do you remove any of the timbers, every timber member is either in compression or tension as part of the truss.
To use this space as an additional room you require the services of a qualified Structural Engineer.
