Bathroom Fitting

New raised wet room floor over older small tray

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.11 PM

I have a bathroom that has an old small shower base tray installed. I do not want to rip it out and have to mess around with new floor and possible outlet pipe changes. If I build a new base around the old shower tray, and put a new shower wet room floor (like jackoboard) on top, so the outlet lines up with the older outlet...will that work as a solution? One thing I think is as the water runs away it will be falling towards and into a pre-set shower tray - so an extra layer of protection if you like. I know it means you step up, but I can do a lip at the front with a shower curtain. So it's a wet room I am aiming for, but a solution to not rip out the tray, but also gain a larger shower area. Thanks.

Hi there, I would strongly advise against this as a solution. How are you intending to support the Jaccoboard tray? these types of tray are designed to be fully supported underneath so as to prevent any movement and possible damage. These types of tray also come with their own waste outlet which will need to be used rather than the existing one that is part of the shower tray. Supposing you went ahead with this method, any water that manages to get onto the shower tray underneath may not all soak away down the waste. Any dampness left on the original tray will not evaporate as it will be covered by the wet deck. If a client asked me to adopt this solution I would walk away as it is not the correct way to complete the work and could present some problems further down the line. I hope this helps.
