Sanding and painting woodwork and walls after carpets laid
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.51 PM
I'm currently purchasing a house that requires a complete refurbishment. I'm changing the carpets so I can move in, and plan to decorate each room at a time. I know it would be easier to to decorate while the house is empty, however we don't have anywhere else to stay. My question is; would it be possible to sand down all the skirting and paint them without lifting the carpets? I've lifted carpets before and they're never the same. I would be using a professional decorator, and don't know if this is a common thing?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

When painting skirting boards with carpet fitted i mask off the edges of the carpet. I find gaffa tape works best for me as it doesnt tear on removal. I place a strip over the carpet allowing for some of the tape to tuck down the gap between the carpet and skirting board (how much depends on the thickness of carpet) tuck that in neatly with a filling knife etc. Once painted it can be helpful to score the bottom edge of the paint-mask before removal of the tape. Just after the paint has dried i find is the best time for removal

Hi peter ideally paint rooms be for moving in but in the real world that dus not happen. I have come across this meny times, on arrival i will fully sheet out the carpets covering the skirting boards with tape, to reduce dust & paint this is very effective.
Then you can get on. Painting skirting board's by replacing the tape to the carpets edge, remove tape after you have finished painting do not leave it as it will settle on the skirting board & the paint will seep down through to carpet.

Hi stuart_90_70, the simple answer to your question is yes, you can prep and paint your skirting boards whilst the carpet is down.
Firstly, protect the carpet edge with 2in masking tape, I prefer this to heavy duty tapes as when you de mask there is a chance of the carpet being pulled away from the carpet grips. Then place down some plastic sheeting and tape this to your masking on the carpet. After that lay your cotton dust sheets on top of these.
Secondly, wear a respirator and have a Hoover handy if your gonna be sanding woodwork and old paints, best to look after your health and your new place.
I've never used one myself but you could try these.
