I was advised to get a new gas fire so went and purchased it but when eng came to install i was further advise the walls to the side of my existing fire place require filling but never told how wide

He's correct your walls will require sealing to make a tight chamber behind you fire known as the catchment area the size requirement for this will be in your manufacturers instruction booklet with your new fire.
