What could be the cause of very loud noise when the hot water tap is turned on?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

When we turn the hot water tap most of the way, in our kitchen sink, a very loud noise starts, coming from water pipes of the tank upstairs. It is very loud, and sometimes start at one pitch, and gets higher and higher, and often sounds something like an aeroplane coming in to land. Are there several things that could cause this? Also, what would be the cheapest process of elimination? Incidentally, the hot water pressure in the bathroom is very low, and maybe these are intrinsically linked, or is it possible for these two problems to be totally independent of each other? Thank you David

water hammer caused by loose unclipped pipework, defective or wrong ball valve in tanks and toilets ,loose jumpers in taps( the part the washer fits on ).check your pipework is clipped ,change valves on tanks and toilet cisterns to equilibrium valves, fit a water hammer arrestor on pipework, low pressure to taps could be scaled up pipework filters on taps blocked,if you have a hot water cylinder the bottom could be full of scale so feed to cylinder may be obstructed.

most of the time water hammer is from mains water going threw a ball valve in the tank in the loft as there is to much pressure going threw the ball valve which can sometimes be rectified by changing the flow receptor or fitting a ballofix/stopcock to be able to reduce the pressure

99% of the jobs I attend with the same problem can be solved by changing the diaphragm washer in the ball valve in the water tank in the loft . Although for what it costs to change the washer you may as well change the entire valve. Costs about £7 for a new one.
