Plywood to hall floor

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.29 PM

My mum's is getting a carpet fitted to her hall floor which is T&G floorboards, these are not great. I think the best solution is to cover it with 6mm ply nailed down with 25mm ring shanks. The 2 problems I have are, firstly the skirtings have 18mm quadrant bead fitted. If I plywood right up to this it will raise up the level and when carpeted might not look good. The second problem is there are 5 rooms entered via the hall, 3 are carpeted and 2 are thin vinyl. Again if I plywood right up to these the increase in level is going to cause problems with the level of carpet and vinyl. All the doors open into the rooms, not the hall, so I might get away with not cutting them as the gap at the bottom is quite high. I dont really want to touch the skirtings or quadrant as firstly my mums just painted them and secondly they've been on for about 40 years and trying to take them off would open a can of worms. What I was thinking would work would be to stop the plywood about 100mm short of the skirtings all round the edge, this would mean the 2 problems I have would be negated, but would the carpet just show the difference in level up after fitting?

hello, you cannot leave a gap around the edges as the carpet gripper has to be fitted to the same height, also the quadrant will need removing to alloew the tuck in gap for the carpet, if you want it done right you will have to bite the bullet and do it correctly . there are shims from firms like stairrrods uk which will bring the levels from the other rooms to the same as the hallway, a good fitter will know this and charge accordingly.
