Strange wall surface uncovered

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi, I have been stripping woodchip wallpaper in an old flat. Underneath there is a thin brown layer of something attached to the walls. It's almost has a waxy texture. It won't come off with steamers and scoring it does not work. Any advice on what it is and how to remove it?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sound like the old paper glue, warm water to wet it and scrape it off ?

Hi there, it sounds like you've found some Victorian wallpaper which back in the day they used to varnish it or oil based clear coat to seal and protect it. As you've found out it done the job, the stuff is a nightmare to remove but the most effective way of removing it is to score the paper or use a fine wire brush just enough not to damage the walls. This breaks the varnish down and allows the steam from the stripper to penetrate and get behind the paper and allow it to be removed. It's a tedious job and it's pain painstakingly monotonous. I know you've stated you have scored it but you need to continue to do this....it's the only way Good luck with it ;)
