Shed/ garden room electric's

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.10 PM

Hi I'm in the process of building a shed/ garden room and need some advice on running in the electrics which I will have an electrician connect and certified. The new building is approx 19m from the house at the end of our garden. I plan to put internally a 4-5 socket ring main. There will be 8 led down lights in the garden room section and a single light (not decided on yet) in the shed sections. Outside I hope to put decking lights and an up/ down light by the door. Now my question is as follows: a. What size and kind of cable do I need to run from the house. b. Cable run above or below ground? c. Consumer unit? d. Anything else I need to know. Thanks in advance

Hi, im glad to hear that you will have a certified electrician to carry out the electrical installation. The cable calculation and length of cable needed will depend on the cable route from ccu to the ring main. You may need to add a ccu in the shed for convenience and this can incorporate the light circuit also. The main ccu will need to be assessed to establish if it can take the additional load demand. A EICR should be carried out before work commences. your certified electrician can carry this out and calculate the cable size and type.

This job is also notifiable to Building Control so make sure the electrician you get is registered.

I would recommend you have your electrician run the cable and carry out whatever work is needed rather than asking advice yourself. The electrician is required to certify the entire install, I know I Am not happy certifying any work someone else has completed if I can't see all of it. You will also need to have the cable rcd protected from the house which may involve an addition inside your property.
