Help. Is it ok to remove rotten wood from sash window, but not replace with good for days?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.10 PM

The suggestion is that rotten wood is removed one week, but not replaced with the good wood until the next week during which time rain is forecast. I thought that this type of repair should be done on the day that the old wood is cut out. If left for days, surely the exposed cut ends on the window frames will get damp when it rains whilst waiting for the new wood to be spliced in. Am I being over cautious? Dear Tom Wills - Have not used this site before like this, so don't know how to post a follow on answer. Thank you for your reply. This is a professional doing the job, and they are already working here. Following your reply, I have insisted that all wood is replaced on same day as the rotten wood is removed. I appreciate your prompt reply.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, Is this a professional doing the job? I'd only remove rotten timber if i intended to splice fresh timber in on the same day. If they remove it and treat the good timber with a treatment to seal it, it will give it more protection but I cant understand why they wouldn't just splice the fresh timber in on the same day. If the good timber isnt treated and it does rain before the splice repair is carried out this could potentially lead to problems with wet rot forming behind the newly spliced timber and will need repairing again and repairing more extensively. My advice, treat the timber as soon as you can before the rain gets to it.
