Damp Proofing

Potential water damage to bathroom floor and hallway walls

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.10 PM

I recently had a water leak in the upstairs bathroom which has since been mended. Without going into the details, the chipboard under the vinyl is quite wet (vinyl has been removed). Also some the downstairs hallway walls have damp patches and mould in some areas. I've been keeping the windows open to help it all dry out but I'm not sure if there has been damage that would need to be repaired before I can re-decorate. What sort of tradesman would I even call to have a look at this? someone with damp proofing experience? a builder? a decorator? Any advise would be welcome.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

i would suggest a builder/plasterer. based on previous experience. 1 the floor will need to be checked including joists (i have no time frame here as no idea how long it was leaking) chipboard will more than likely need replacing. as for the walls if there plasterboard then plastered there worth getting replaced too. ie cut out all damp patches. that way there is no reason for mold to start to grow and spread. re painting may just mask a problem

A damp proofing specialist, for sure. The home insurance body are leaning on Trustmark and other authorities with clout, to stop the average joe bloggs builder doing damp proofing works, because they don’t know enough about it, it’s costing the home insurance body millions and millions of pounds every year in payouts because of it. I come across damp problems that have been done by mr builder and their works has failed, on a daily basis, the poor customer then has to pay a damp proofer to correct the work....criminal.
