removing bedroom ceiling and using loft space as extended ceiling with mezzanine bed

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.10 PM

would it be possible to remove the plasterboard ceiling and some loft floor joists and build a raised mezzanine bed platform to enable the current bedroom/s to have more space. Very small bedrooms and low ceilings. The loft space would obviously need to be modified reinsulated, and currently has a lot of wooden joists to support tiles which could maybe be modified. Unfortunately the loft space itself is not high enough to create a new room in itself, but with a mezzanine could have a high ceiling and even a velux in the rooftop. it doesn't appear too complicated but maybe there are some issues I have missed? thanks Stef

You have to be very careful when you're moving beans off of the laughed because they support the roof if you take one or two out you may cause the roof outside to bend and we can and it will be no good if get a storm so make sure and get proper advice by a specialist

Hi Stef, Your idea of turning the loft space into a mezzanine bed platform sounds like a great way to add some extra room to your bedrooms! While it's definitely doable, there are a few things to keep in mind: Structural Check: Before getting started, it's a good idea to have a chat with a structural engineer. They can help make sure that your plans are safe and up to code. Building Rules and Permits: Check out local building rules and grab any permits you might need. Different places have different regulations, so it's good to be in the know. Room Height: Make sure that even with the new mezzanine, the loft space meets the minimum ceiling height standards. Comfort is key, right? Insulation and Airflow: Think about keeping the loft cozy with insulation and good airflow. Nobody likes a drafty space! Electricity and Plumbing: Consider how your plans might affect wiring and plumbing. It's important to make sure everything is in working order. Easy Access: Plan for a cool and safe way to get up to your new mezzanine. Maybe a stylish staircase or a fun ladder? Bring in the Pros: Getting help from pros like architects and builders can make your life a lot easier. They know the ropes and can guide you through the process. Budgeting: Keep an eye on the budget. Knowing how much you want to spend helps you plan things out smoothly. Natural Light and Fresh Air: Think about how to bring in lots of sunlight and fresh air. Skylights or well-placed windows could do the trick! In a nutshell, your idea is awesome! Just make sure to dot your i's and cross your t's by consulting with professionals and checking local regulations. Best of luck with your project! 🛠️✨
