Electrical

Cable on the outside of the wall

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi there I've just had new bathroom put in. In the sure cubical and near the bath wall there are two insets in the walls so to put all your shampoo n stuff. I've asked my builders if they could have light strips in them, as there is a strip of light under my wall hung wash basin. They answer came back yes. So they started the work, with tiling the whole bathroom first. So I got in touch with the company who supplied the all my bath suite. They were not able to give me answer straight away wether these lights were water proof. Anyway, this went on for few days, with lot of phone calling. In the mean time builders were sorting out plumbing n electrics etc. By the time I got my answer, it was too late, the builders had already done the wiring in the box and tiled them. So then I went to electrical shop with my friend to get my water proof lights for the shower, excited....as it had remote control different colour LED we bought them. Only to find out after a day or two that they are not going work, as the cable installed is wrong core, these need 4 core.;( Anyway cut the long story short. Builders have got them working by changing cable. But they couldn't get the cable through to some parts of the shower wall with out having take all tilling off from two different walls, so they drilled through to outside wall, put trunking..... which looks awful, not to mention through my roof of kitchen extension. So my Q is Apart from cosmetic, is this cable safe, being on the side of the hse? Although it's in white trunking. Ps* bathroom is upstairs it's a semi detach house. I

Always fascinates me why people get builders to do electrical work or even come up with the right answer/solution to electrical work. This sounds a right shambles tbh. Stupid question... did you get any sort of electrical certificate for this? Think I know what the answer is. My advice would be to get an electrician in to advise etc.

From what you are saying, this sounds like a real lash-up. I dread to think of what they've done here. Whoever carried-out the work should have issued you with either a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate and/or an Electrical Installation Certificate upon completion. If not, you should inform your Local Authority Building Control. Any homeowner who allows a builder to undertake electrical work in their house is inviting trouble. I strongly advise that you immediately seek the services of a qualified, professional electrician to make an assessment and to advise you accordingly.
