Central Heating

Heating is off but one radiator is boiling hot

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.10 PM

The heating and hot water is set to come on twice a day. The thermostat for the central heating is currently set to 0. The thermostatic valve on the radiator in one bedroom seized up last winter and broke off. This radiator has been boiling hot for a few weeks now. If I replace the thermostatic valve and turn it to 0 will this solve the issue or is it something else. I also have a heated towel rail in the bathroom that is heated by the hot water as opposed to central heating but I always turn it off in the summer. This heating system is 18 years old. Not had this problem before and always done same I.e. Left heat in but thermostat turned down in summer.

It could be that the hot radiator is the safety one... I had an old farm house with this. The heating system had one radiator that was used to deal with excess hot water. The system was oil Rayburn heated with a hot water tank and sometimes the radiator got hot if the hot water was not used. It may well not be this, but it is my only experience with what you are describing.

If the old valve was broken it would be advisable to have it replaced.
