Black mould on the ceiling of two bedrooms and a bathroom

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Hello my mum has two bedrooms with black mould on the ceiling above the windows and in the Corner going down the wall from the ceilings and this is in both rooms and mould on the wall above the bathroom window, mum put double glazing Windows in the house in 2006 and that's when the mould started and she has tried everything she is up at 6am and has all the windows in the house open right up till bedtime 10pm and even bought treatment for mould and it still won't go away. In 2012 she redecorate and even got the viral mental health council out to see it and they don't know what it is, then we got a guy that works on building sites and said that our installation was blocking our vents in the attic so he pulled it back but the mould is still there and we have tried to get rid of it and it's not working can you help my mum please the you. We live in Northern Ireland

Most houses these days are very well insulated with cavity and loft insulation and double glazing. This means they are great for heat loss but cannot breath. In the colder months the relative humidity will rise, the average family produce around 120 pints of moisture each week and if this cannot escape it will cause condensation on the windows and lead to mould growth. Homes should have a combination of good heating, insulation and ventilation. Most have the first two but many lack adequate ventilation. Good extractors in the bathroom and kitchen and a positive input ventilation unit will stop the problem for good.

has the house got wall insulation installed, how well vented is the loft area . as this seems to be cold spots created by the wrong combination of ventilation plus insulation, would also keep the window open a tad at night in the bedroom while sleeping as its new double glazing it should have a security lock which allows the window to be opened just a crack while still being secure, thats all it needs a few millimeters. good luck alex

Do you have an extractor in the bathroom, when you shower?if not you would benefit from having one fitted.the exterior walls of some houses bridge the cold from outside, when the warm air, which has moisture in it hits the walls, it condenses,( turns to water)this gives the mould a great place to grow. so insulating those walls by means of fixing insulation boards to the interior walls or insulation to the exterior of the wall. I usually try the extraction first as this often works especially in a bathroom, if you have already got extraction fitted, maybe you need to upgrade the extractor to a more powerful design.
