Should a Gas Ignitor and washing machine be on the same extension cord

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.10 PM

Hiya We've just had a kitchen fitted and it has turned out we didn't have enough plugs for the washing machine, dish washer & ignitor for the Gas hob. The kitchen fitters have hooked the gas hob up to the power via an extension cord as we didn't have enough plugs for both the washing machine & the hobs. While the guys have said this is fine, is this safe? We have just paid for a whole new kitchen and don't want it to be ripped out - but of course, safety comes first. Is it safe to have both the ignitor and the washing machine plugged into a standard 2 plug extension cord? Thanks

Hmm, new kitchen, not enough sockets, and extension leads 'hooked up' sounds a delightful scenario. Was an electrician involved in any of this? I have come across loads of extension lead disasters with a lot of loading on. Your choice entirely, but I would get an electrician in to rectify and give you peace of mind, and enough sockets-without extension leads!

Not worried about the hob as it is only briefly used for igniting the gas. However, I would not really recommend running a washing machine from extention lead as the extension lead and more importantly the plug will probably get hot. I have seen several that have melted onto the sockets due to heat build up from prolonged use. Agree with other poster that this seems like a big mistake by the fitter, can they not fix it? If you do decide to stick with this, I would regulary check, whilst using machine, to make sure lead and plugs are not getting hot. Many regards
