Hot water system humming and toilet cistern slow filling

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

When the shower or hot water tap upstairs or hot tap in clockroom are used you hear a loud humming/buzzing noise. To stop the noise you move the lever to the hot tap on the kitchen mixer and the noise stops until next time. rather annoying. This also seems to affect the bathroom toilet cistern and then the water tank in loft hisses for hours. I turned the screw on the hot pipe under kitchen sink slightly and this all seemed to cure the problem and toilet working normal again for about 2 weeks. now this week the noise has started again everytime the shower is used which is on a mixer tap on the bath. I also have an ensuite but this shower doesn't cause any problem, The toilet cistern is hidden behind tiled wall with only a small button push flush so no access to the cistern without removing the tiles

Hi there. There are a few questions that need to be answered first. Have you had any plumbing work done recently? Is it a tank fed system or a pressurised system? The problem could be caused by either high pressure (so you could do with installing a pressure reducing valve) ,or , If its an open vented (tank fed) system, it could be as simple as the ball valve needing to be replaced on the header tank! You could try turning the stop cock in your property off and then reopen, (but not fully) just enough until you get a decent flow of water from all outlets. You may find that if the stop cock isnt open full bore- it might, just might, remedy the problem. Worth a shot! I hope this helps! Regards, Steve

Hi sounds like water hammer being caused by the float valve in your cold water storage cistern I would advise you change the float valve and this should correct the problem
