Paint neighbours fence or put up my own?

Anonymous user 28 June 2017 - 9.47 AM

I want to paint the fence on the left hand side of my garden to match the rest of the fencing (which I own), but it's my neighbours fence, the paint may run through onto their side and they seem unhappy about that. I don't want to upset my neighbours. To avoid any problems I could put up my own fence which would sit right next to theirs (it would be costly because I'd have to buy concrete posts too). Is it possible to buy my own fencing but attached it safely to their concrete posts? If so how do you attach it?

I wouldn't also advise to install your own as your neighbours can change and future residents may disapprove as well as it always results in being an issue and if your not happy to connect to their posts you could install your own.

If they are happy for you to attach your fence to theirs then that's helpful, but check first. Best method would be to drill through and bolt. Failing that you will need to tie yours to theirs by putting high tensile wire round the posts and then twisting the wire tightly together.

As far as having your own fence attached to the neighbours post be careful. Concrete posts are reinforced down their length with internal re bar. This can make drilling into them difficult and can lead to them cracking. I have seen this in the past with clients trying to attach bird feeders etc. If you planned on having a complete new fence directly against the neighbours be aware of the existing post positions and that they will be concreted under the ground.
