Can i fit an immersion heater into my standard hot water tank

I have a hot water tank heated by the central heating which is coal fired. so i'd like to have electric heat when needed, but dont know if i need to replace my tank to take an immersion heater

is it a copper cylinder if so most of these have a boss on top and some on the side for an immersion heater any plumber can fit one,you might need an electrician to fit a power supply to it.
