Stain from decorator's filler (caulk)
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.10 PM
I used filler (caulk) from a gun (not powder mix from a packet) to fill cracks and pits in a wall. I was very surprised to find that there is something in the filler mix that keeps coming through the emulsion I painted over it and causing patches. I have used a stain blocker and STILL it comes through. I have a couple of questions. 1) Is there some killer effective stain block that would stop the filler stain coming through? 2) Are there particular brands of gun filler that are OK, and ones to avoid, for this problem? Thanks for your help!

Hello Arkwright,
The best way to have filled the cracks and pits would have been to rake out the cracks and filled with a suitable filler. Once dry sand flat and it would be ready for painting. Caulk is most suitable for filling gaps Eg - between skirting boards, door frames and coving etc. Caulk needs time to dry and is best done at least 24 hours before painting. Your best bet would be to apply an oil based undercoat over the affected stained area, allow time to dry and then apply your chosen top coats. Hope this helps and good luck.

Use a filler or paintable decorators caulk you have probably used a caulk used for windows n doors to stop moisture, clean old caulk out and redoing with a printable caulk
